Join our award-winning London tour guide, on an immersive walking tour through Bloomsbury, a neighborhood rich in LGBTQ+ history and cultural significance. This 60-minute journey will take you through three iconic squares, covering approximately half a mile on foot. Starting at Russell Square, we'll learn about the area's notable former residents, including Oscar Wilde's time here after his release from prison. We will learn fascinating insights into Wilde's life and the challenges he faced as a prominent figure in the LGBTQ+ community. As we stroll through the charming streets, we'll discover the former offices of the renowned publishing house Faber and Faber, known for its association with literary giants like T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden. The tour will then lead us to the iconic British Museum, providing a glimpse into the world-famous institution's history and its connection to the local LGBTQ+ community. Continuing our exploration, we'll visit a historic LGBTQ bookshop established in 1979, which served as a vital meeting space for various groups, including a lesbian discussion group and the Trans-London group. Our guide will share fascinating stories about the bookshop's importance and its role in fostering a sense of community. As you cross the road for a closer look, you'll learn about the Gaze Bookstore, named after a musical by Ivan Novello. Our guide will recount the store's history, including a 1984 raid by customs officers and the subsequent legal battle, highlighting the resilience of the LGBTQ+ community. The tour will culminate at Tavistock Square, where we'll delve into the life and legacy of Virginia Woolf, a celebrated writer who lived in the area from 1924 to 1934. Our guide will share insights into Woolf's literary achievements, personal relationships, and her contribution to the Hogarth Press, which published Sigmund Freud's works in English.
